Sports injuries, tooth decay and gum disease are just a few of the many reasons that adults, kids and teenagers may be missing teeth. While these things are common, the loss of self-confidence you deal with when you don’t like your smile doesn’t have to be accepted. Dental technology is constantly evolving, and Dr. Tokarczyk is happy to offer dental implants to patients with missing teeth. In order to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure, consider the guidelines below.
Consult a Professional
Before you can make a final decision about whether implants are the right choice for you, you should always meet with a periodontist for a consultation. During this appointment, you’ll discuss your health history, overall oral health and any concerns you have about the procedure. Typically, good candidates for implants have the following characteristics.
· Healthy gums and teeth
· Commitment to good oral hygiene habits
· No smoking
· Enough bone to support the implant
· No existing medical conditions such as autoimmune disorders or uncontrolled diabetes
· Have not received certain cancer treatments
Implants are placed over several appointments, and the process can require some patience on the part of the patient. If a bone graft is required, it may take up to six months to heal. Once the actual implant is placed in the jawbone, it can take another six months before the final crown is placed. At this time, you’ll have a natural, white smile that you can be confident about.
If your gums and teeth are not healthy or your struggle with gum disease, you may need to undergo periodontal treatment before you are ready for implants. Once the condition is under control, you are ready to start repairing your smile.
