How to Floss: Use the Right Technique for Healthy Gums
One of the causes of periodontal disease is plaque buildup between the teeth. Flossing helps remove plaque in places where the toothbrush does not reach. Use these tips when flossing:
- Use a piece of floss about 18” long
- Wrap most of the floss around the middle fingers of both hands
- Hold the floss tightly between the thumb and forefinger
- Gently insert the floss between the teeth and move it in a back-and-forth motion
- Bring the floss to the gum line then move it up and down each side of the tooth
- Make sure to floss between all teeth
- Rinse vigorously to remove any remaining particles
